Countdown to Counting Words

We have decided not to hold Stephen Brooke's new poetry collection, 'Counting Words,' until next year, as originally intended. The release date now (and this is fairly solid) is October 25. More news, cover reveal, and so on to come in a bit (once 'The City and the Sword' is out). 'Counting Words' is a collection of poems with an emphasis on language and its uses, both serious and for play.

Shallow Poet Release

Stephen Brooke's new poetry collection, SHALLOW POET, is now available at our store: https://www.lulu.com/shop/stephen-brooke/shallow-poet/paperback/product-95qk475.html

The book is also available as a free download in PDF and EPUB formats from arachispress.com

We have removed all our print poetry titles from distribution to bookstores, which means they can only be purchased directly from Arachis Press. It also means we were able to cut our prices almost in half. They remain available as free ebooks at our site.

Shallow Poet

One thing we are certain of for the coming year is the release of Stephen Brooke's poetry collection, Shallow Poet, on April 21, 2024. The book largely (but not entirely) focuses on the poet's lighter and more humorous work. Here's the cover. More soon on what's coming next year.

Site Update and Free Books

We (at last?) have a completely up to date and finished website (arachispress.com). The latest books are up, every print book we offer is directly linked to our own store (though they may be purchased elsewhere), and all the ebooks are now free to download. Yes, there is a page with them all listed, in PDF and EPUB format.

We had given the free thing thought for quite a long time and finally decided we would prefer to have the books read than to hope to make a few dollars now and again. Especially in that we do not deal with Amazon and no longer create Kindle editions. This includes every book by Stephen Brooke, Sienna Santerre, and Oliver Davis Pike.

New For Twenty-Two

Our next release—and the only new book scheduled so far for 2022—will be a collection of poetry by Stephen Brooke, TICKING. Release date is set for April 21. As in the past, the print edition will be for sale 'everywhere' and the ebooks, both EPUB and PDF, will be offered as free downloads at our site. Here is the cover:

We continue to roll out new editions (minor cosmetic changes and typos only, plus dedicated Kindle versions) of our books. We are working on getting out Stephen Brooke's early fantasy novels first, the four books of Donzalo's Destiny and the three Malvern adventures. Do expect more novels later this year; we shall announce them when we have firm dates.

Coming in 2021

Time to announce some upcoming titles—those for which we have release dates set. Be assured, other books will follow these this year.

First is the science fiction time-travel novel WHEN MAN WAS YOUNG from Stephen Brooke. Release date is set for March 20, 2021. The cover:

And a blurb:

Ken Sasaki and his fellow time-travelers paid well for the Neanderthal experience—two weeks living with an Ice Age tribe, becoming part of that tribe.

Things did not quite work out that way. The last minute addition of a woman scientist to their group caused some grumbling. That proved to be the least of their problems as they found themselves struggling for survival in an inhospitable world, an age ago When Man Was Young.

A novel from Stephen Brooke and the Arachis Press

The second is a poetry collection from Stephen Brooke, THE MOON AND I. Coming May 15.

The moon and I conversed last night ~

These poems are conversations with the moon, with the night, with the soul. The birds and the wind, dreams and memory, speak in this collection from Stephen Brooke, THE MOON AND I.

Further releases will be announced as we decide on release dates.

On Chapbooks

In this age, we are not sure there is much point in the traditional printed chapbook, except for distribution to a small and local readership. There is little advantage, from a cost perspective, to printing a smaller book (usually poetry) via either a commercial print shop or a POD site.

When copiers or mimeographs were pretty much the only (or at least easiest) route for tiny, low-budget presses, the chapbook made sense. In fact, our very first book, Stephen Brooke’s poetry collection ‘Pieces of the Moon,’ had its original run as a small book produced with a laser printer. It was not quite a chapbook, strictly speaking, at forty-eight pages. Close enough for our discussion.

Within a couple years, we had moved to a POD model and have used that since. To be sure, most of the books from Arachis Press are also available in ebook form. Perhaps chapbook-length books are better suited to a digital format in this day and print should be reserved for longer works. This is not to say we absolutely would not offer a chapbook of poetry in print; however, we would not allot one of our somewhat expensive ISBN numbers to it for wider distribution. It would have to be offered directly from our store, only (or sold at readings, etc).

And with shipping costs, base price of a POD book, etc, it would still be perhaps too pricey. This is also the reason the idea of a print ‘literary’ magazine went on hold (permanently, maybe).

The poetry titles we currently offer (under the Eggshell Boats imprint now, and not including children’s books) run from that original forty-eight page book up to one twice that length. That seems a good range. ‘A Poet’s Day,’ due to be released April 21, 2020, has seventy-four pages and ninety-one pieces. We try to keep the cost of such books at under ten dollars (with discounts) direct from our store but some are a little higher when purchased from other retailers (Amazon et al).

Incidentally, all of Stephen Brooke’s collections are free as ebooks (at http://insolentlad.com/ebooks/) but otherwise we feel $1.99 is a good price for a digital book of this sort.

2020 Spring Releases

We have set the dates for our next two releases, both by Stephen Brooke. The fantasy adventure novel, “Warrior of the Moon,” is set for February 15, 2020. This is the seventh book set in the world of the Mora and the first of a new trilogy.

April 21 is the release date for the poetry collection, “A Poet’s Day.” As with Brooke’s other poetry books, the ebook version will be a free download. Beyond these two, we have no set dates for any other releases but the second Wilk adventure is likely to appear by summer. That will be announced when it is set.

And of course "Smoke," the third Cully Beach mystery will be out shortly, the official release date being November 30.

Free Books

As we promised a couple posts back, all of Stephen Brookes poetry collections are now free to read and/or download in ebook format. These are EPUBs, which most should be able to read on computers or devices, and all have been revised a bit from the versions previously for sale. They may be found at here.

Of course, the print editions continue to be sold at our store and at retailers 'everywhere.' If you like the electronic versions, consider buying the print (or any other of our titles!).

Into 2019

Some announcements for the start of a new year:

First, all is on schedule for the official February 2 release of Stephen Brooke’s latest fantasy adventure, “The Jewels of the Elements.” This is the sequel to “The Eyes of the Wind” and the second book of the Sajam Saga. Print and ebook versions are with our distributor and should become available pretty much everywhere by the release date (assuming one ebook vendor or another doesn’t find a problem — it does happen). The books can be purchased right now at our own store.

Second, we have finished (at least for now) revising all the print editions of our catalog. The last titles should undergo final approval over the next couple weeks or so. We are not hurrying quite so much on the ebook versions primarily because we would like to use our distributor’s conversion software and it has become unreliable. A new and better converter is promised so we shall see — we can do it ourselves and just might if it takes much longer.

Third, we are no longer going to offer any of Stephen Brooke’s poetry ebooks for sale. The print versions will continue but it has been decided to give the ebooks away from now on. There will be announcements about downloading or reading them online shortly.

And fourth, the brand new action espionage novel by Stephen Brooke, “The Dictator’s Children,” will be out on May 4, 2019. This is a tale set in 1948, in Cuba, Florida, and Central America. Lots more on that as we get nearer to the release day.

Magic is Coming

The new poetry collection from Stephen Brooke, MAGIC, will be out on December 1, 2018 from our Eggshell Boats imprint. Just in time for your holiday shopping (not that one can't buy it anytime!).
